Energy Efficiency at Home

The household sector consumes approximately 11% of the total energy in Indonesia.  Based on this fact, efforts of energy efficiency in this sector are important, not only to save money on household energy consumption, but also to put the brakes on overall energy consumption.

As a first step of energy efficiency measures, the household should know the types of equipment that consume the most energy.  In Indonesia, appliances such as air conditioners, heaters and water pumps and electronic equipments are the main source of electricity consumption in the household sector.  To calculate the approximate amount of energy consumption and the cost of electricity per month in households, please use our Energy Calculator

How to Save Energy at Home?

First, in terms of electricity requirement planning and selection of electrical equipment, households can conserve by:

  1. Connecting and using electricity as required.  Small households for example, should have sufficient power with 450 VA or 900 VA, while medium sized households with 900 VA to 1300 VA.
  2. Choosing the right electrical equipments according to need, which also meet energy efficiency standards.

Second, in terms of behavior, household members can be energy efficient through behaviors such as:

  1. Turning on the power of equipments only when necessary.
  2. Regularly maintaining electrical equipments.

Third, in terms of building design, households can also save significant amount of energy.

The location and design of a house plays an important role in energy efficiency, especially in terms of temperature setting and lighting.  For example, openings in a building such as doors and windows should be built facing North or South to avoid direct sunlight.  This will reduce the heat that comes into the house especially in daytime.  By installing more windows, natural light can be utilized to the maximum extent in order to save on the use of artificial lights.

There should not be any gaps or vacuums between the walls, window seals or doors in order to keep away warm air from entering the house; this will also help lighten the load on the air conditioning system. Higher ceilings will provide a more effective ventilation system that also reduces load on air conditioning.
